In what ways is Tarantino and experimental filmmaker?
In Tarantino's films he using many elements to make him unique and make his films tackle the stereotype of mainstream film. Tarantino plays with the narrative structure in the way that he does not tell the story in chronological order and also in the film Pulp Fiction where there is multiple story's being told all in one film, this makes the focus come away from the narrative as the story lacks complexity, but the narrative is very interesting and intriguing. In his film Pulp Fiction there is a telling of several throughout the film which shows the effects of each event and how they affect one another, also Tarantino likes to mix the order of the story which is against the mainstream filmmaking. Tarantino plays with the genres and mixes the genre features which is known as a bricolage, this is a mix of generic elements within the film and how Tarantino uses this in Pulp Fiction. He uses a gangster style film while also uses dialogue that is not normally seen in this genre of film but which is impelling and intriguing based on the fact that it is taking the focus off the narrative but on the dialogue and to embed the spectators into the film. Also his use of generic elements like in the car where we see Vincent and also when Butch escapes the boxing match Tarantino uses projection this is a post-modern element of film which shows the experimental filmmaking of Tarantino and his work. Tarantino uses different juxtaposing themes and elements in Pulp fiction one where we see the theme of a gangster and crime film with a scene of twist dance in 1950s diner this is very experimental because this is something that is known to be in a gangster film. The budget of the film is also something that Tarantino experiments with when he made Pulp Fiction, He did this by not paying the actors a lot of money for example Bruce Willis who at the time was in the middle of Die Hard was getting paid $20 million for his films but in Pulp Fiction he inly got paid $50,000 for playing the role of Butch. Also, the other actors at the time wasn't the biggest at the time like Samuel L Jackson was an up coming actor, John Travolta was having a dip in his career and Uma Thurman was a B list actress at the time. He also used half of the budget on a scene in the Jack rabbit slims dinner that was only in it for 10 minutes he did this to make the spectators notice the place and made him more experimental in his films.
