Political and social context in "This is England" 80s

The political and social context in This is England are really important in the making of this film and the ways in which Thatcherism at that time was a massive thing that affected a lot of people in the way that Margot Thatcher ran England and the film shows very well the affects of capitalism at this time in England. Also the affects that skinheads had on the society at this time in England and the way that skinheads are shown in different ways in this film and difference in the types of skinheads at this time. Thatcherism made the rich people more rich and left behind the working class to go into poverty and to lose money the film "This Is England" shows this very well and all the character in this film are the products of the affect of Thatcherism and the impacts that it had on the skinhead culture. Also there was a lot of unemployment at this time because of Margaret Thatcher policy and the way she went about her work. By making people just get on with there life's and try to make it themselves and not helping people like the social class which course riots and make skinheads be shown in a bad way by the violent in the riots and the fighting with the cops made the skinhead culture change. A famous politician at this time called Norman Tibet came out and said "Get on your bike and find work" which was said to target the people rioting against the prime minister at the time Margaret Thatcher to tell them that they can find work but that they need to try something rather then trying to make the government to it for them.        

There was skinheads who liked black Jamaican people and there music and skinheads was a way that they would all come together with music and clothes like woody in This is England. But there is also other type of skinheads like the ones who are very racist and are against people who have a different skin colour to them and are all about being English and being proud of your country and where you are from and not letting other people that are origins are from other country into England to take all the jobs like what Combo believes in This is England.

    You knowledge of the cultural and the social contexts are fine, but you haven't discussed in any detail how these are shown in the film, through its characters or its mise-en-scene, you need to comment and use examples from the film, and the triangular relationship between Woody and Combo and Shaun and the battle for his attention as the two adults represent the different sides of skinhead culture. You need to relate this to the film much more, as it is it is more politics and sociology than film studies

      There are two sides of skinheads in This Is England Combo is more of the racist side and aggressive where as Woody is more the original skinhead who likes to dress a certain way and likes to be friends with Jamaican people. They both have a important role to play in the film as a father figure for Shaun in the way that Woody got Shaun into the skinhead culture and was there for him when he was getting bullied and them Combo was there to help Shaun deal with the loss of his father and made him do something about it and turn against Woody and go Combo's way. The mise-en-scene shows Thatcherism in the way that it affected people differently in the way that Woody just got on with his life where as Combo didn't like the fact that Margaret Thatcher was prime minister and was against the fact that she sent soldiers to the falkland island and wasted the time in that.

The film Trainspotting portrays social and cultural contexts very well in a post Thatcherism era, in the way that the film deals with the effects of Thatcherism and the lack of work for young people in the working class.
