British Film Essay

This essay will explore narrative structure in This Is England and narrational devices in Trainspotting to create meaning and understanding for their audiences and how they are used. narrative structure is a structure that tells the story in a certain pattern and the order that the story is told, narrational devices are techniques that are used to tell a story in different ways, such as flashbacks, voice overs, open endings and use of real footage.

In This is England narrative structure is used to tell the story in a certain way like for example the story of how Shaun is trying to look for someone that he can look up to like a father figure and him trying to find his mark in the world. Shaun comes across Woody and his gang Woody instantly positioning himself as a father figure for Shaun, when informed he is being bullied. Woody begins to take Shaun under his wing and protect him and stop him getting bullied we first see this when Gadget starts to make fun of Shaun's pants and Woody starts to defend him and stands up for him. Woody also invites him out and into his gang which shows that Woody cares for him and starts to become a father figure for Shaun because of the way that Shaun looks up to him and wants to be just like him. This film crates meaning and understanding because of how it affect certain people because it tackles a lot of things but mainly racist and how bad is was back then, so for people that have seen this film and was born around the eighty's and was growing up around that time will react to the film differently and will affect them differently then it will me because i have grown up around that environment and society. This film also tackles skin heads and typical skin head where back then and how a typical skin head was someone who stood up for their country and didn't like anyone who was a different colour to them and how certain people come from other country's to England and get jobs and how skin heads come across as really racist for example Combo who plays a typical skin head who's wants all Asian people to leave the country and everyone that was born in England to have a job. Combo is also a character that is a father figure to Shaun and takes Shaun down a different path to Woody and starts to make Shaun do certain things like being racist to Asian people and is a different type of father figure for Shaun because it is almost like Shaun already knows his place with Combo and Combo is just the older and wiser one.

In Trainspotting narrational devices are used to help create meaning and understanding for the audience this film uses several different devices like real life footage and flashbacks but one of the main ones that it uses that is really affective is voice overs because the way in which the voice over is delivered and the meaning behind the voice over is really important and good understanding for the audience. The first voice we hear is at the very start of the film when one of the characters Renton is speaking about choosing life and many people would chose to have a good life and would want to have a job, a mortgage and a car and things like that but he says "why would i want all that when i have heroin", so this is putting heroin in a bright light like he is saying that heroin is better then all these things and that everyone should take heroin. It is also quiet ironic that he would rather have heroin then anything else this helps the audience gain an understanding of what type of person Renton is and how he has chosen his life it also make the audience feel like Renton doesn't want help to try and get off heroin. They also use flashbacks in this film which are really affective and help the audience gain a better understanding of the story we see a flashback when Begbie is talking about his game of pool and how someone started on him these flashed backs are used really well to help give information to the audience. The use of narrational devices has crated a meaning that people that have experience drug use and have been affect by drugs will look at this film differently to others because they have been around this sort of thing and have experience drug use before and have grown up with this.

In conclusion narrative structure in This Is England and narrational devices in Trainspotting help to crate meaning and understanding for there audiences and they tackle lots of different opinions.
