Social contexts of Trainspotting

While Trainspotting was being filmed Thatcherism and the aftermath of Thatcher being prime minister had a massive effect of how people live their lives and it had a higher demand on what people wanted. Thatcher thought that the government shouldn't own all the businesses and that their should be private owners that should run the businesses which help make more determined people succeed in life and the less determined people will not succeed which at the time had a positive and negative effect on certain people, Thatchers policy is still spoken about today which shows that her policy is really important for the way that England is run today. In Trainspotting Thatchers policy has a negative effect on the characters in this film because her policy doesn't allow them to get certain and stable jobs because of what life they are living and the society and the people they have grown up in and with this shows that Thatcherism can also have a negative effect on people.

AIDS is referenced throughout the film of Trainspotting and how heroin has a grater chance of giving you AIDS also their is a lot of irony where Tommy is the one that ends up dying by AIDS and he is the one that used heroin the least out of the ones that used it. It is partly Renton fault for the reason that Tommy started taking heroin in the first place because Renton took Tommy video which then made Tommy lose his girlfriend and resort to taking heroin which then eventually made him die of AIDS. There are also another reference of AIDS when Renton is trying to get off heroin and starts to see things like the baby and then the game show that is about AIDS which just shows the consequences that come with taking heroin.

Trainspotting social and cultural contexts

The film Trainspotting portrays social and cultural contexts very well in a post Thatcherism era, in the way that the film deals with the effects of Thatcherism and the lack of work for young people in the working class. Thatcherism legacy lived on through the 90s and still developed a lot of unemployment among the UK and this is shown in Trainspotting from the lack of work shown in this film and the fact that none of the main characters have jobs shows that there are still Thatcherism policy is still going on.
