Analysing It scene
The performance in this scene is really good and their is a contrast between how the little boy acts compared to the clown. The little boy in this acts happy about the boat and enjoys playing in the rain until his boat goes down the drain, he gets annoyed but then when he sees the clowns it shocks and scares him because he doesn't expect it. But as they talk the boy starts to feel more comfortable taking to the clown even though he is a stranger and starts to have jokes and laugh along with the clown. The boy comes across as a fun boy who just wants to enjoy himself. The clown acts really strange and scary but he try's to act joyful and happy in front of the boy to try and make him be his friend. This has a contrast with how clowns really come across in horror film they are meant to act scary.
The performance creates a meaning in your head that the clown is really not trying to be his friend and also that he knows his and his brothers name that the boy doesn't realise seems a little bit strange, and that he is just trying to just take him. The horror side of the film comes out when the clown bits the boys hand off and drags him in to show that the clown is just there to take him. Also the laugh of the clown is sinister which makes the character seem more strange and scary as the scene goes on.
Setting
The weather in this scene sets the scene the best because the rain and dark go well with the events and something like this wouldn't happen or look right in the day time and that the dark really brings out the meaning in the scene. This makes the killing more real when it happens because of the atmosphere and the weather around them and that the cat and the women seeing the boy and then him just disappearing seem a little strange.
Lighting
The lighting in this scene is dark with lighting used that reflects off a brilliant white screen to light up a little the scene which is fill lighting, They also use a spotlight to light up the clown and make him standout while in the dark this creates a meaning of that the clown is meant to stand out to show that he is important in this scene. They also use a under shot lighting to make the clown seem more scary as he is speaking like he is telling a story this makes the clown seem more menacing it even makes it seem a little strange.
Costume
The costume stand out in this scene because the boys yellow coat stand out compare to the dark night and the basic colours and also shows how the boy feels inside which is a happy mood but that is the opposite to the way the film is and the genre. The clown costume is linked to the sense of horror and makes him stand out compare to the dark night also the way the clown looks seems a little scary because of how he appears and looks with the atmosphere around him.
Cinematography
The camera work in this scene is good by the amount of work used one of them is a tracking shoot while the little boy is running to show the dramatic effect of it. They also use a static shoot while they are speaking to make the speaking more serious. Also the camera lifts up into the air to show the whole scale of the scene. The camera movement in this scene is fast for the movement of the boy and when he is running having fun but then starts to slow down as we come up to meeting the clown where the movement starts to slow down. This is effective because it stars to put the audience on edge and make them worry about what is going to happen it also has a sense of fear in the boy and to people watching.
Editing
They use mainly cuts involved in this scene to show the stages in the scene and the main points in the scene. Throughout the film they just use cuts to just say 'and' which has a effect by the action of the characters which also results in a consequence and the editing cuts tells you whats happening next. They also use a corse and effect to show the effect of the characters action and what happens next. The spatial considerations which is the space between the characters is effective because the characters are close up to each other speaking and the space between them creates quiet a sinister effect and tells the audience the atmosphere around them. The temporal consideration which is the timing and the pace of the scene is quiet up beat and fast at the starts then starts to slow down when they speak but then as the clown bites the kids arm off the pace starts to speed up to the effect of what has just happened and also the timing of that is really effective because it comes at a time where it starts to slow down and get boring it shifts to get more intense and upbeat.
Sound
The sound used is mostly diegetic sound the sound of the water also them speaking but some non-diegetic sound is used the music which the characters cant hear but the audience can hear the sound. This makes the scene more affective by the music being quiet dark and scary which links to the context of the genre the film and the way the film is acted. The sound slows as they speak but then speeds up when the violence happens to show the effect of that and to make it more dramatic and puts the audience on the edge of their seat.
This is a well written and detailed piece of work Dylan with very good analyses of the key areas of study and how they create meaning for the audience.
ReplyDeleteWWW- good use of terminology and explanation of the mise-en-scene, especially the performance and the excellent exploration of how time and space are established in the clip through the editing.
EBI- you had discussed these features in relation to the genre of the film and how they reflect the generic conventions or challenge them, perhaps by using some other examples of horror for comparison.
Show me- reply to this post and outline how the genre is established through the film language features you have analysed.
The genre is shown in many ways through the film language features by using the mise-en-scene, costume and make up. This scene is a typical horror scene because the use of costume helps to bring out the horror because of the clown costume which shows a lot a red colour which is a colour that links to horror. In this scene the use of make up to show the blood by using red to make the scene more shocking and scary when the child arm came off the make up helped it to become more real and brings out the horror and makes it really scary. Also the music in this scene links to horror because the music is quiet slow and dark that links to the genre of the film.
