Halloween Opening sequence. How is meaning created?

Performance
The meaning is created in the opening sequence by the the performance of the child which implies that it is a dark opening also it puts a sense of fear and on edge by the way the sequence is played. This puts the audience on edge because as the boy picks the knife up the audience have a sense of fear in them because it comes across as their is a death going to happen. Also the couple are performing is normal and they are just enjoying their time together which makes the death that more shocking. The performance by the parents is different the father try's to comfort the little boy but on the other hand the mother just stands still and puts her hand in her pockets which implies that she doesn't care and looks not that bothered.

Lighting
The lighting in this sequence is dark and only a lamp on which suggest that their is a sense of fear in this part also it shows that their is naturalistic lighting. The lighting is very dim which comes across as scary in the way that the opening is going down a dark ending which results in a death.

Setting
The setting in this opening sequence shows that the family are a stable family with their home being nice and clean, Their dining table was clean and set out with the candles out which suggests that they eat together and comfort each other. This make the death seem more brutal and shocking because it is out of nowhere and is opposite to the way the setting is.

Costume
The costume in this opening sequence is linked to Halloween by the way the child is dressed as a clown which is to try and scare the audience and links to the title of the film. Also the clown costume is an ironic costume and is stereotype to the theme of Halloween.

Cinematography
The camera work in this opening sequence is good because it is all one shot which is effective because it is free flowing and does not stop and start which doesn't break the action. Also it is a point of view shot which is good because it make the audience feel like they are the killer in this and it also gets the audience more involved in the piece. the camera also follows the boy which is a good tracking shot which involves movement while acting.

Comments

  1. A reasonable first piece of work Dylan, although it is a little descriptive in places and not really analytical enough to explain in detail how meaning is created.

WWW- Some reasonably detailed comments about camerawork and to discuss meaning through the performance

EBI- you had discussed in more detail the film language and terminology in your analyses, for example in the comments about lighting you should have commented bout the use of different lighting techniques to create soft lighting and what the effect of this is on the audience. You might also have commented upon how the visual features are typical for a film of the horror genre.

Show me- reply to this post and outline on more detail how the lighting has been used, make sure you use some of the terminology which is on the guidance sheet.

    1. The lighting has been used to show make the house seem more natural. They use a fill light to light up the room and also use a back light to crate a shadow of the child which makes the kid seem more scary and bigger then he actually is. They use soft lighting which is lighting off a brilliant white screen and provides diffusion to make it more naturalistic but also comes across unnoticeable. This type of lighting is a dim light which sets the scene really well and makes the room dark which gives the audience an idea of what is going to happen. Their is a contrast between the light and the dark which creates an chiaroscuro effect.
