Diving Bell And The Butterfly

Narrative
The narrative of the film and the structure reflects the key themes and messages of the story, The story of a man traded in his own body which suffers from a stroke and becomes parlayed but his mind is still intact which give him the imagination to write a book on his life and the things that he has suffered from and the ways in which his life was different in ways that can not be imagined, the character suffers from locked in syndrome which allows his mind to still be conscious but his body to be still and non responsive. The narrative of the story is open to the spectators in a way that it allows the spectator to indulge in to the characters mind and feel the way that he is feeling also the narrative shows the same emotion throughout the film of an emptiness and blandness. The structure of the film is strange in the way that the story is basic but the way that it is set out not in chronological order which represents the key themes which shows that his body is heavy and like a diving bell and his mind is a butterfly that is imaginative and helps him to write his book.

Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene in this film works well to create meaning throughout the film and helps to also create emotion for the spectators and helps to get a real feel for what the characters are feeling and how his life has been affected. Devices used to portray Jean-Do imagination and that his imagination is still intact and its the only thing that he can use to help keep him from falling apart and thins is a freedom for the spectators because is could change viewpoint, by not seeing him as a man that is incapable but someone who is mentally free and that he can still imagine things and still has a memory that work perfectly fine. Also it helps to show juxtaposition within two scenes the scene where Jean-Do is helping his dad to shave to the next scene where he is on the beach with his family and cant move which symbolises, that in one scene he is in control, strong and confident to shifting to him being parlayed and not in control which makes the feeling of each scene stronger and more affective. Also in these two scenes the mise-en-scene is used usefully two create meaning by in the fathers day scene he is the only thing moving and everything else is still which shows that he has all the power and confidence but in the scene on the beach its the opposite because he is paralysed and still and everything else moves around him which shows the juxtaposition with these two scenes. Also the director mades the wife and the kids wear clothes that will blow in the wind which empathise more that everything else is moving because they could have their hair tied up and jeans on but then the scene would lose its meaning and the mise-en-scene would not be as effective. The images of the iceberg breaking symbolise many different things like his body falling apart over time or that he mind is rebuilding itself because when he first gets locked in syndrome he is mad and cant cope but towards the end he accepts it and becomes peaceful. I personal think that the ice berg represents both his body and also his mind and then when we see the iceberg rebuilding itself its his dying and going up to heaven and being like everyone else and that he is now back to who he was.
