Vertigo Opening Scene Analysis

In the opening scene of this film is quiet strange because it leaves a lot of unanswered questions like How he survived? and How he got down from the building?. This is used to make the scene more affective and to make the audience think more about the scene. Also the purpose of this opening scene is to set the way the film is going to go and to show that Scottie has Vertigo and how the film links back to this and linking to him having Vertigo. Another purpose is to how he gets his fear of heights? and the way in which it happens and where he is? which is in San Francisco. We learn a lot about the main character in this opening scene about him being a flawless character and has a lot of personal problems and about him becoming what he is in the future as a person but also as a cop. The cinematography in this opening scene is used really well they use a point of view shot to show the audience what he can see they then use a contra zoom to show that Scottie has lost his perspective has to show what his eyes have done to him and what they have made him see. The mise-en-scene in this opening sequence it really dark but the city lights make is a real life perspective of the city of San Francisco and you start to see more of the dramatic affective of the scene of Scottie falling off the building. The police officer in the uniform helps to tell us that Scottie is a cop and just any man and it tells us who are the good and bad people in the opening sequence.

  1. A reasonable level of detail Dylan and some good references to the main points of the opening sequence within the film.

You could add more detail on a couple of areas though Dylan, you have referred to Scotty as a flawless character, the opposite is true and he's very much a flawed character. Reply to this post and explain why this is and how this will go on to help us to understand the character as the film progresses.

    1. Scottie is a flawed character because he has many weaknesses like that he has Vertigo which means that he is scared of heights he also falls in love Madeline which is what make him become more mad and more controllable over the women. Which shows the difference in gender and how familiarity the women are and how masculine Scaottie is. This help me to understand the character and film more because I can now understand that Scottie has a lot of things that he wants like he wants to be with Madeline and he will do anything to be with her, but then ends up having nobody. This help to show the meaning of the film more and gives a lot of meaning to the film.
